Chapelle Saint-Garadoz et Tour de l'Aubépin
From the Aubépin belvedere, you can not only enjoy a magnificent panoramic view over the Bresse plain, but also a restful place to picnic and relax next to the tower and chapel.
You will discover the remains of a medieval castle. There are still the ruins of the feudal castle of the Counts of Laubespin, dismantled by order of Louis XIV in 1674. It was one of the largest fortresses, guarding the ancient border between Franche-Comté and the Kingdom of France. The chapel was destroyed along with the castle in 1637.
Today's smaller chapel is dedicated to Saint-Garadoz. It is said that in 1423, the Earl of Buchan, Constable of Scotland, a prisoner in this castle, was freed thanks to a ransom that included the relics of a renowned saint from his country, Saint Garadoz.
A very popular pilgrimage was dedicated to him until the beginning of the 20th century... His relics continued to attract large numbers of people for the cure of various illnesses, kidney ailments, rheumatism and many other conditions. At the beginning of the 20th century, a historian wrote: "These were numerous and noisy meetings, vogues where merchants, strolling singers and acrobats came to open their stalls or set up their trestles".
