Eglise de Vieu en Valromey

-

While there are about thirty churches and chapels in the Valromey, the church of Vieu is one of the most beautiful. It is one of the oldest churches in the Valromey (11th and 12th centuries).
Vieu was a vicus, a place where the Roman legions used to stop and rest. In Vieu there was an amphitheatre, a temple, and baths, supplied by an underground aqueduct.
The church was built on the site of a former Roman temple, with the re-use of slabs and especially two columns.
Beautiful porch, choir in flamboyant style.
The bell tower was restored to its original spire in 1985 (a spire made of tuff, a light and porous stone).
