Eglise Saint-Cloud

-

When it was built, the bell tower had no religious purpose. Between the 9th and 12th centuries, it was used as a watchtower. Franche-Comté was not French at that time, so it was used to watch over the surrounding area in case of attacks from the French Burgundians. The bell tower was one of the 4 sentinels of the Revermont, along with the Château de Chevreaux, Rosay and Beaufort.

The bell tower comprises the belfry and the round tower with spiral staircases leading up to the terrace. There is a panoramic view of the Monts de Bourgogne and the Revermont. The bell tower has 3 bells. One of the bells is more recent: during the Prussian wars in 1870, one of them was melted down to make weapons, so it had to be replaced. This one comes from an Annecy foundry and dates from 1954.
The steeple is 22 m high to the terrace and 28 m to the weather vane.

The first church was built in the 13th century by the monks of Gigny. It was taller than today's church, but smaller all the same. This church was probably destroyed by fire in the 15th century.
The present transept church dates from the 16th century.

It was enlarged between 1830 and 1870 by the inhabitants of Maynal and Augea to accommodate the latter, who had no church of their own. The Nave of the Calvary and the Nave of the Virgin were then added.
