Ermitage Notre-Dame de Mièges
The Hermitage of Notre-Dame de Mièges is a major religious site in the Jura not far from the Cluniac priory. The story goes that, in the 15th century, a knight quenching his thirst in a spring called "Sainte Fontaine" spotted a statue of the Virgin of Montaigu. He decided to take his discovery to the church of Saint-Germain, but the following day, the statue was found a few metres further on.
An oratory was then built to house the statue, followed by a chapel, before a hermit settled there in 1613. Since then, pilgrims have flocked here in large numbers, and several miraculous cures have been recorded, including that of a blind child who is said to have regained his sight. Every year, two pilgrimages bring the faithful of the canton to the village of Mièges, one in spring and the other in autumn.
The Hermitage chapel is freely accessible. It is open every day from 8am to 5pm.
