Established in Besançon in 1203, the Hospitaller Order of the Holy Spirit built a chapel and hospital buildings in 1207 thanks to the generosity of Jean de Montferrand. From then on, the congregation's main mission was to care for the sick, the destitute, pilgrims and abandoned children. Over the centuries, the architecture of the building has undergone a number of changes, with modifications to the chapel, the construction of a tower in the 15th century and a carved wooden gallery a little later.
The decoration of this gallery is a happy blend of medieval and Renaissance expression.
