A century of workers' and cooperative history accessible to all!
La Fraternelle" grew out of a workers' cooperative set up in Saint-Claude in the late 1870s, and was transformed into a food cooperative in 1881. It was radically different from other cooperatives in that all profits were paid into a social fund, which provided provident, relief, retirement and mutual aid services. A whole philosophy, a social, political and trade union culture was then put in place. And what could be better than to bring these different activities together under one roof? Following the example of the "Vooruit" in Belgium, the Sanclaude co-operators bought a building in the heart of the town and built the Maison du Peuple, which was inaugurated in 1910.
The heir to a realised utopia, the association La fraternelle, has been bringing this 4,000 m2 building back to life for over 30 years. Today, it is a cultural and artistic space, a place of memory, broadcasting and contemporary creation at the heart of the town and the Haut-Jura: café, cinema, theatre/dance, music, silk-screen printing workshop, art library, archives, shop...
