A century of workers' and cooperative history accessible to all!
La Fraternelle" originated from a workers' circle created in Saint-Claude at the end of the 1870s, then transformed into a food cooperative in 1881. It was radically different from other cooperatives in that it provided for the full transfer of profits to a social fund, which allowed for the setting up of provident, emergency, retirement and mutual aid services. A whole philosophy, a social, political and trade union culture was then put in place. And what could be better than to bring the various activities together under one roof? Following the example of the "Vooruit" in Belgium, the Sanclaude cooperators bought a building in the heart of the city and built the Maison du Peuple, which was inaugurated in 1910.
Heir to a realised utopia, the association La fraternelle has been reviving this 4000 m2 building for over 30 years. Today, it is a cultural and artistic space, a place of memory, diffusion and contemporary creation, located in the heart of the town and the Haut-Jura: café, cinema, theatre/dance, music, silk-screen printing workshop, art library, archives, shop...
