Musée de l'Abbaye / donations Guy Bardone - René Genis
High cultural place labeled Museum of France, in the heart of Saint-Claude next to the cathedral.
Located in the place of the former Benedictine abbey of the city, this museum is the result of a donation from two artists: Guy Bardone, a local child, and René Genis. Their collection presents several generations of artists around the great names of modern art such as Bonnard, Vuillard, Vallotton, Dufy and the donor painters Guy Bardone and René Genis.
The visitor will discover, within a contemporary architecture, large open and very luminous spaces, offering one of the most beautiful panoramas of the city on the surrounding mountains.
The basement is home to an invaluable archaeological site: the most important, and only, remains of the abbey of Saint-Claude known to date. Founded in the 5th century, it is one of the oldest abbeys in France.
NB: In order to make the most of the visit, it is advisable to enter the museum at least 1h30 before closing time.
