Lac de Chalain

A must for swimming in the Jura!

Lake Chalain is the largest natural lake in the Jura. On the lake shore, the remains of villages with houses on stilts dating back to 3000 BC have been remarkably preserved below the water level. After 30 years of study of the lakeside settlement, the site constitutes one of the most extraordinary documentary sources for the knowledge of the daily life of men and women in the Neolithic. The research site cannot be visited (more information: http://www.chalain.culture.gouv.fr ).

Beyond this exceptional past, the lake of Chalain is today a paradise for holidaymakers and sportsmen. Many activities are possible on the lake, in the middle of turquoise waters that can be admired from the Fontenu lookout.
