METABIEF

Métabief is a charming commune in the Haut-Doubs region, nestling in the heart of the Jura Mountains, close to the Swiss border. Situated between 923 and 1,419 metres above sea level, its unspoilt mountain setting is ideal for nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts.

A little history
The name Métabief has its origins in the ancient words "mete" or "methe" meaning "milestone" and "bief" meaning a stream feeding a mill. The Bief Rouge stream, which runs through the commune, once served as a natural boundary between the baroichage of Pontarlier and the seigneury of Jougne. In 1882, a communal sawmill and flour mill was built on the banks of the Bief Rouge. Today, this building houses the Musée de la Meunerie, a listed building that bears witness to the region's artisanal past.

The environment
Métabief is committed to sustainable, environmentally-friendly tourism. The village is dominated by Le Morond (1,420 m) and offers privileged access to Mont d'Or (1,463 m), the highest point in the Doubs département. The landscape alternates between dense forests, lush green meadows and Alpine vistas, offering remarkable natural diversity. The mountain climate is characterised by harsh winters and mild summers, ideal for a multitude of outdoor activities.

Leisure activities
In winter:
- The Métabief ski area extends over 40 km of downhill ski runs, divided into 26 pistes of varying levels, and also includes a snowpark.
- The Nordic ski area, connected to the Grande Traversée du Jura, offers numerous cross-country ski and snowshoe trails.
- Activities such as dog-sleigh rides and rides on Comtois horses allow you to discover the snow-covered landscapes in an original way.
In summer :
- Mountain biking takes centre stage with over 25 km of downhill, enduro and cross-country trails, served by a chairlift. The trails, which are suitable for all levels, are approved by the French Cycling Federation.
- The "Luge des Cimes" summer luge offers a fun experience through the fir trees, accessible to all thanks to an anti-collision system.
- The "Métabief Aventures" park offers activities such as accrobranche (tree climbing), tyroliennes (zip lines), buoy slides and fun courses for all the family.
- Paragliding flights are also available to admire the Jura landscapes from the air.
