Maison de l'Émail

The Maison de l'Émail in Morez maintains and develops a unique know-how through :

- welcoming professional enamellers and experienced amateurs to its vast workshops.
- organising professional courses (Datadock-certified training centre).
- organising introductory courses (enamelling on steel, cloisonné on copper).
- organising courses for amateurs on Friday evenings at 6.30pm.
- carrying out specific enamelling orders on metals using all techniques (plates, objects, photos, screen printing, prototypes, etc.).


For nearly twenty years, the Maison de l'Émail, an association under the law of 1901, has been working to maintain and develop metal enamelling in Morez.
Thanks to the support of the municipality, 400 people, amateurs, craftsmen and enamelling artists are brought together by the Maison de l'Enamel. The premises are used from time to time by people from all over France, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Spain, etc.
Since June 2019, three enamellers have been working in the workshops we have created in a special area of the Maison de l'Enamel.

Enamel in Morez

The art of enamelling metal consists of covering a metal surface with a vitrified substance.

Enamelling was first practised in the canton of Morez in the mid-18th century, when a Swiss dial enameller set up shop there at the request of the town's watchmakers. Local craftsmen, familiar with metalworking, diversified their activities, initially working on the manufacture of enamel dials. By 1935, almost 400 enamellers were at the heart of Morez's economy. Street numbering plates, road signs, cemetery hearts, signage for the SNCF and the Paris metro, and many other things besides, are all Morez specialities.

Today, Morez enamel can be used by architects, designers, manufacturers, local authorities and artists.
