Indissociable from the Lac des Mortes, from which it is separated only by a thin strip of land, the Lac de Bellefontaine is a high altitude, shallow lake, fed by springs and melting snow.
While the Lac de Bellefontaine is in the Jura, the Lac des Mortes is mostly in the Doubs, as they straddle the two departments.
The lake is not a place for swimming, but its environment is very rich, with the most protected peat bog in Franche-Comté, with boreo-arctic type vegetation and fragile fauna.
A hike around the lake is possible.
