A counterpoint to the Parisian studio on rue Hautefeuille, famous for being the setting for the obvious painting L'Atelier du peintre (1854-1855 - Musée d'Orsay, Paris), Gustave Courbet's studio in Ornans was built by the artist in 1860. Located in "[his] country", built on the outskirts of Ornans, this new space was imagined as a modern studio that emancipated itself from traditional urban models and adapted to the practice and career of a painter torn between Paris and Ornans.
Forgotten for almost a century, it was bought in 2007 by the Doubs Department and registered as a Historic Monument on 24 July 2008. As part of the Courbet Centre, this place full of history, inseparable from Courbet's modernity, is experiencing a renaissance thanks to a restoration campaign launched by the Doubs Department in 2019.
Come and discover this exceptional place, the setting for a little-known treasure: the only décor painted by Gustave Courbet.
