Abbaye impériale de Baume-les-Messieurs
Baume-les-Messieurs Abbey, in the Jura region, is an ancient Benedictine abbey. The first written mention dates back to 869 AD, but archaeological excavations have revealed older remains. These discoveries suggest that a monastic community was already present before the 9th century.
In 909, Abbot Bernon left Baume-les-Messieurs with six monks to found the famous Abbey of Cluny, alongside monks from Gigny-sur-Suran. This foundation marked a major turning point in European monastic history.
