Head for Arbois to spend a pleasant moment discovering the river and the local produce. Because although the waterfall of Les Tufs, in the village of Planches-près-d'Arbois, is a sight to behold, it is also your gateway to a unique land whose produce, history and environment make it truly one of a kind.

An enchanting walk

Les Tufs waterfall

The waterfall of Les Tufs is an iconic natural site near Arbois. At the bottom of one of Jura's typical steephead valleys, it is an impressive sight in summer when it gushes with water. In winter, the negative temperatures make it freeze over and visitors can feast their eyes on a unique, dazzling spectacle.

But whatever the season, this waterfall is a pleasant place for a family outing, to empty your mind and stretch your legs. You can park 500 metres away and continue on foot... An easy walk for children and adults, to the waterfall and beyond if you fancy prolonging your experience by following the trail along the riverbank...

Beware of nature's fragility

The waterfalls of Les Tufs are a very fragile natural habitat, home to plants and wildlife typically found in cold, well-oxygenated whitewater sites.

For this reason, the site, already protected by its Natura 2000 listing, now benefits from additional specific rules. It is forbidden to:

  • park within a specified limit,
  • use motorised vehicles,
  • light a fire,
  • bivouack or camp,
  • bathe

Please be mindful of the site's biodiversity, as well as your own safety, by observing these guidelines.

Tasting Jura Wines

In Arbois you will of course find Arbois wine! A wine which, for mere mortals, will always be known as "vin jaune", the yellow wine with a unique taste that takes its very essence from a savoir-faire found only in the wine cellars of Jura.

A tasting session (with moderation) is an absolute must during your stay in the Jura Mountains. And when it's time for a drink after a pleasant walk ... It's a joy indeed!

Arbois and the family home of Pasteur

But Arbois is also the town where Louis Pasteur (1822-1895), the famous man of science grew up! And what do you get if you put a scientist and a bottle of wine in the same room? Pasteurisation!

That's right, Louis Pasteur was looking for a way to eliminate harmful microbes in wine when he came up with the idea of heating it! Although the concept was widely adopted, in the case of wine it was quickly abandoned.

To find out more about the famous researcher, visit Louis Pasteur's House which pays tribute to the man and his work during a visit to his workshop on the upper floor of his family home.
