A protected site
The Grand Colombier is the highest point of the Bugey region (1,531 metres) in the southern part of the mountain range. It is a listed Sensitive Natural Area and its high prairies play a very important role in terms of biodiversity. Multiple species have found refuge here and the flora is particularly dense.
The Grand Colombier is also a Natura 2000 site. To fully appreciate its riches, certain rules must be observed, and a charter has been drawn up to encourage mindful practices between visitors to the Grand Colombier.
The top of the Grand Colombier offers breathtaking views. On a clear day, you can admire the Alps, the Belledonne mountains, the Mont-Blanc, the Bugey region, the River Rhône and 3 mountain lakes, Lake Bourget, Lake Annecy and Lake Geneva.
2 viewpoint indicators, accessible by car, will help you fully appreciate the scenery:
"Le Fenestrez" at an elevation of 1,150 metres: from Culoz, follow the RD120 road and, at the Sapette crossroads, turn left onto the D120b.
"La Croix" at an elevation of 1,525 metres: to get there, take the RD120 road from Culoz following signs for the Col du Grand Colombier. You'll find a car park nearby.
Seasoned hikers and contemplative walkers
Hiking heaven
When it comes to hiking, the Grand Colombier is paradise for both seasoned hikers and contemplative walkers! There's no shortage of hiking trails here, and you can reach the top from practically any side of the mountain.
A number of itineraries will take you to the Grand Colombier:
Circuit des Sioux (13km)
Circuit des Crêtes (10km)
Grand Colombier from Culoz (26km).
It's also possible to drive almost to the top, enjoying the spectacular views on the way up.
The Grand Colombier pass!
A Tour de France finish line
In 2020, the Grand Colombier hosted the finish line of the 15th stage of the Tour de France cycle race, which started in Lyon. Considered to be one of the most difficult mountain passes in France, it is a real challenge for cyclists. In fact, many cycling events are organised here every year, including the Journées Cyclo du Grand Colombier races.

Lavours Marsh
The Lavours Marsh Nature Reserve offers a splendid view of the Grand Colombier. The marsh can be explored along a 1.2km trail raised on piles where you'll find interpretative panels and birdwatching hides dotted along the way.
The nature reserve boasts an outstanding biological wealth.
The Maison du Marais features a beautifully presented museum area devoted to the fauna and flora of the marsh. There's also a nature shop and a refreshments area.
