There's no shortage of summits in the Jura Mountains and these legendary peaks are hiking heaven. You're sure to find yourself at some point on the famous GTJ trails, some of which are physically challenging, others more gentle, or walking across the Regional Nature Park. You can hike all day or even for several days, staying in the mountain refuges that you'll find along the way.

Staying in a mountain refuge...

If you decide to hike over several days, you have the option of staying in the mountain refuges that you'll find along the way.

Where to bivouac

Alternatively, you can take the economical and increasingly popular option of bivouacking along the way to enjoy a taste of adventure. You should, however, observe certain rules:

  • Set up camp near a waymarked trail, a village or a refuge, so that you have access to toilets and drinking water, as well as shelter in the event of a storm
  • Keep your dog on a lead for the tranquillity of herds and wildlife
  • Do not light fires
  • Take your rubbish away with you and dispose of it in a bin when you cross the next village

Be aware that there are places where bivouacking is not allowed (Risoux, Massacre and Haute-Joux forests) and others where it is regulated (in the National Natural Reserve of the High Jura, bivouacking is allowed without a tent).
