Montbéliard, a small city at the gateway to Germany, is the ideal place for a family day trip or a weekend getaway! Between the Christmas market, the fairytale castle, the car collection at the Peugeot Museum in Sochaux, and the Pré-la-Rose park, your children are in for a lot of fun!
Town centre and castle
What better introduction to this city than a walk through its inviting centre that regularly wins prizes for being so festooned with blooms? Coloured facades, half-timbered houses, and traditions that are the very essence of the town that fully deserves its official Art and History seal of approval.
Look up to admire the romantic castle that towers above the town, bearing witness to its long chapter of history spanning 4 centuries during which Montbéliard was a Germanic principality. Make sure you visit the castle, not just for the views but also to see the archaeology and natural history exhibitions devoted to a local palaeontologist, Georges Cuvier. Herbarium, fossils and other collections that should spark your children's curiosity.
Vintage Cars and Gardens
Retrace the legendary saga of Peugeot in Sochaux (a 10-minute drive away). You cannot miss the famous lion brand that shaped the history and economy of the Montbéliard region.
For a start there's the production plant that has been in Sochaux since 1912. It employs some 10,000 people and produces 1,800 vehicles per day! (Book ahead for a tour.) Then there's the Aventure Peugeot Museum where a wide range of vehicles are on display: racing cars, charming vintage cabriolets and various legendary models…they're all there!
Back to Montbéliard for a bucolic walk in the Pré la Rose Park. Hedge maze, water jets, giant insects, rare plants, and scientific mysteries at the Science Pavilion…Go exploring this fabulous park on foot or by conference bike, a 7-seater (perfect for large families!) that provides explanations about the scientific curiosities encountered along the way.
You can follow up your tour with a visit to the science pavilion just a short distance from the park! All year round, the interactive exhibitions offer insight into the world around us, an ideal activity to do with children. In addition, hands-on activities are proposed and there's also a Fab Lab.

Christmas in Montbéliard
In December, Montbéliard is the perfect place to enjoy a magical Christmastime experience. The streets and squares are festooned with some 60,000 lights that make the city a magical sight and beckon visitors to follow the sparklingly original trail that they create.
Another key item of the amazing Montbéliard December is the Christmas market reflecting the purest of Germanic traditions, of which the Montbéliard region is very fond, given the geographical proximity. Aisles full of food stalls, mulled wine, arts and crafts, it's all here!
