With its protruding rocks, the waterfall of Baume-les-Messieurs, a village of charming character, is a natural treasure lying at the bottom of the steephead valley, and a starting point for multiple hiking trails.
A 100% natural waterfall
Located at the bottom of the Baume-les-Messieurs steephead valley, one of the most famous in Jura, this waterfall is remarkable in many ways. It is fed by the Dard, an underground river that emerges after raging through subterranean caves.
Here, the pure and crystal-clear waters create sumptuous colours that enhance the bright and lush green environment.
Starting point for multiple hiking trails
There are many hiking trails for both novices and seasoned walkers that start at the waterfall.
From the narrow footpath just above it, you can appreciate how clear the water is!
From the waterfall, you can follow a section of the 'Echappée Jurassienne", an iconic itinerary that croses the Jura Mountains from Dole to the resort of Les Rousses.
You can also climb to the panoramic lookout point above the steephead valley of Baume-les-Messieurs to admire the beauty of the landscape and its natural riches.
DiscoverA waterfall to visit in any season
The designated trail allows visitors to reach the waterfall at any time of year, and each season brings its share of surprises. During heavy rainfall, the water gushes abundantly. The freezing temperatures of winter (when cold enough) result in some impressive ice sculptures. In spring, as the snow melts, the spectacle is accompanied by the deafening sound of water spurting from the ground. Finally, in summer, the area around the waterfall is the perfect place to cool off and enjoy a picnic.
