What if happiness was just about taking some time out for yourself at the weekend? And why not do so between Bourg-en-Bresse and the Revermont mountains?

Here is an idea for a weekend break with the perfect combination of the peaceful atmosphere of Bourg-en-Bresse and the stunning scenery of the Jura Mountains. This break is the ultimate way to experience both city life and unspoilt nature. A blend of culture, heritage sites, food & drink and the peaceful Revermont countryside.

Day 1 – Morning

A leisurely stroll around Bourg-en-Bresse

Kick off the weekend by exploring Bourg-en-Bresse, the prefecture of the department of Ain. If possible, we recommend coming by train with your bike, as there are plenty of trains coming into Bourg-en-Bresse station.

Once you arrive, set off to find out about the history of the town by strolling around the historic neighbourhoods. Half-timbered houses, Notre-Dame co-cathedral, the Porte des Jacobins, parks and gardens, there's so much to see in Bourg-en-Bresse.

Top tip: make sure you pick up a map from the Tourist Office to find your way around more easily.

Day 1 - Lunchtime

A gourmet experience at the Beau Marché

It's lunchtime so make your way to the Beau Marché food hall where you'll find a dozen vendors, all serving fresh, quality products. Behind this industrial-style building was once Amiot high school. Today, it is the place-to-be for the locals of Bourg-en-Bresse.

Royal if you please!

Stop by the Monastery of Brou

It's time to head towards Revermont. An unmissable sight along the way is the Royal Monastery of Brou, one of France's most beautiful monuments. This route then leads you alongside the charming Reyssouze river, and past Bouvent leisure complex.

Day 1 - Afternoon

A bike ride through nature and tasting sessions...

You'll be cycling through the Revermont vineyards, surrounded by the golden colours of autumn. Where are you headed? To the Cuverie de Revonnas where Aurélien Beyeklian will guide you through a tasting of his Bugey wines.

A few kilometres further on, you'll arrive at the Cuverie de Revonnas for a tasting session accompanied with the estate owner's expert advice. After learning all about Aurélien's fine wines, it's time to get back on your bike to go and explore the charming village of Bohas-Meyriat-Rignat, and the church overlooking the vineyard.

Day 1 - Evening & night

... and an atypical overnight stay!

To end the day, go back to the winery, this time to enjoy an extraordinary evening and overnight stay. This evening you'll be getting a taste of slow tourism in a tiny house in the midst of Aurélien's vines. You'll have the chance to enjoy the estate's wines before then getting a great night's sleep in your little wooden hideaway, just for you!

Day 2 - Morning

Mountain-biking through the vineyard

After enjoying your morning coffee, it's time to start pedalling and continue your exploration of Revermont. From the paths through the vines at the base of the Croix de la Dent, there are some incredible 360° panoramic views.

Make your way towards the village of Journans along a path reserved for pedestrians. Wander around the narrow streets of the village at your own pace. Head up to the municipal campsite and admire the beautiful view down below. Finally, treat yourselves at the restaurant À la Source. A cup of coffee out on the terrace is just what you needed!

Day 2 – Lunchtime

A bucolic lunch break in a pretty village

For lunch, head back to the village of Saint-Martin-du-Mont, and more specifically to the restaurant La Cour de Récré. Here, the chef concocts tasty and creative dishes using local and seasonal products wherever possible, and as an added bonus there's a shaded outdoor seating area with a stunning view across the Bresse plain.

It's not easy to get going after such a wonderful culinary experience. We'd like to just stay here and admire the scenery. But it's time to head back. So we get back on our bikes one last time and cycle back to Bourg-en-Bresse.
