Explore the 165 metres of passageways built in the 19th century to relive the glory days of salt production at Salins-les-Bains. From the discovery of the saltwater springs to modern-day industrial developments, you'll learn how salt extraction came to drive the economy of an entire region.

Listed as UNESCO World Heritage, the royal saltworks of Arc-et-Senans is first and foremost an architectural work of art. Its two museums reveal the many facets of this exceptional site.  One tells the story of salt, the other focuses on the visionary genius of its architect, Claude-Nicolas Ledoux. You can then enjoy a stroll in the gardens.

The route stretches for 300 km from Arc-et-Senans, home of the majestic UNESCO-listed Royal Saltworks, to Bern in Switzerland. This is an adventure you can enjoy by bike or by car, to admire the amazing scenery and an impressive built heritage of fortresses, customs posts, salt warehouses, way stations, inns... and towns that became spa resorts thanks to their salty waters.
