A weekend in Lons-le-Saunier is about unwinding at the spa and visiting the town centre, the Laughing Cow Museum, the Fine Arts Museum and more. It is also an opportunity to take advantage of this ideal location in Jura to explore the surrounding area, recharge your batteries at the lakesides, visit the vineyards to taste Jura wines, or enjoy a breath of fresh mountain air at the resort of Les Rousses, for example.
Day 1
Spa baths and museums, the essentials
The spa resort
What better way to kick off the day than relaxing in a saltwater bath at 32°C? That's exactly what you can do when you spend a weekend at a spa resort.
So now you're raring to go and explore the lovely town centre of Lons where you absolutely must stop for a coffee on Place de la Liberté, then head for the multitude of shops under the arcades of the Rue du Commerce.
Museums
Culture fans will enjoy visiting the small but very interesting Fine Arts Museum where you'll be able to admire paintings by Courbet, Bruegel the Younger and other famous artists.
But the real star of Lons-le-Saunier is... the Laughing Cow! Indeed, those famous cheese triangles have been made right here in Lons since 1919. To go behind the scenes and find out why this worshipped red cow has been laughing for the past century, head for the museum devoted to it!
Behind the French national anthem made famous by the soldiers of Marseille (hence its title... Marseillaise), there is also a man from Jura! In 1792, Captain Rouget de Lisle (a musician), who was born in Lons-le-Saunier, spent a night composing this "War song for the Rhine Army".
An anthem capable of motivating his troops as revolutionary France went to war with her European neighbours.
Day 2
Places to visit in the surrounding area
Lons-le-Saunier makes a great base from which to explore the surrounding area and visit some of Jura's key sites.
Just north of the town you can visit the vineyards of Jura to sample vin jaune and other wines made from savagnin, poulsard and other grape varieties. On your way, don't forget to stop at Château-Chalon and Baume-les-Messieurs (both 20 minutes away), listed among the "most beautiful villages in France"!
Head east to visit the Lakes Region and revitalise your mind and body on the banks of one of the dozens of natural and manmade lakes.
Prefer to take to the heights? Then head for the resort of Les Rousses (1 hour away), perched 1,200 metres above sea level, for an elevated getaway between mountain pastures, ridges and spruce forests!
