A river flowing through the mountains... made famous by the painter Gustave Courbet, a local man, the river Loue winds its way through Ornans, a picturesque village with a Venice feel. Officially branded a characterful town, this place has charm oozing from its wild and romantic landscape that even becomes mystical in places.

Others come to this lovely characterful town to enjoy romantic walks in its picturesque centre.

Portrayed many times by Gustave Courbet, the master painter from Ornans, this pretty little town is packed with remarkable built heritage. For starters, it has houses perched on stilts, Renaissance private mansions, little streets at the water's edge and flower-festooned bridges that have earnt it the nickname "Little Venice".

Keep your eyes wide open and don't hesitate to walk through gates, into courtyards and under porchways. In Ornans, the river Loue flows past every street corner!

The Courbet Museum, a must-see

The Courbet Museum in the heart of Ornans devotes 1,000 m² to the works of the famous 19th-century painter who pioneered realism.

The museum, which originally occupied the house where the artist was born, has since been extended into two adjoining private mansions that were superbly renovated in 2011. You'll love this unusual ensemble with its glass paving and huge glass walls offering panoramic views of the town, the river Loue and the cliffs.

Courbet's home and museum stands right by the river, where his paintings are surrounded by the very landscapes that so inspired his work .

Visit the museum

To paint a landscape one must be familiar with it. I know my region and that's what I paint. This woodland is my home, this river is the Loue, this one is the Lison. These rocks are in Ornans and Le Puits Noir. Go and see them and you'll recognise all my paintings. Gustave Courbet

To round off your visit

Courbet's studio

Step into the painter's private world by visiting the studio where he painted from 1860 to 1873, when he was exiled to Switzerland.

It was here in this former foundry of Ornans, which is perfect for large-format painting, that Courbet produced his major works, including Killing a Deer.

Well-kept secret: Courbet's studio still conceals a little-known gem, a ceiling painted entirely by the artist himself! Outstanding!

Get a different viewpoint

Ornans from an alternative angle

Nestled at the far end of a plateau, surrounded by cliffs and water, Ornans offers a vast outdoor playground. Don't hesitate to take to the heights or tackle the white water to appreciate this town in all its beauty.

Take to the heights

Contemplate the views from the panoramic lookout points

From Ornans, many hiking routes invite you to escape to the heights... And it's well worth making the effort!

- Castle lookout point: in addition to the panoramic view, you'll also see the ruins of the castle walls, the demi-lune and the old chapel (which can also be reached by car).

- Enjoy the panoramic view over the Loue Valley and Ornans from Notre-Dame du Mont. On the way there, stop at the fountain of gossip, so named by Courbet when he came to paint here while listening to the chatter of the washerwomen.

- Rocher d'Ully lookout point: one of the most beautiful views of Ornans, the cliffs and the castle.

- Canoeing: the region's star activity.

- Canyoning: one of the most beautiful canyons in the Jura Mountains where you can jump into natural pools, slide down natural slides, try whitewater swimming and abseil down cliffs.

- Stand-up paddleboarding: unguided and at your own pace.

- Air kayaking: in the company of a guide, throw yourself into the turbulent waters of the Loue Gorges for a challenging whitewater descent.

- Vertical experience: 3 dizzying abseiling descents, down high waterfalls totalling a drop of 120 metres.  Guaranteed to get the adrenalin flowing!

Try Via Ferrata - if you dare!

Try the via ferrata experience, if you dare. This is a fabulous alternative to hiking, traditional high-ropes trails or climbing, which can get too technical. Here's your chance to enjoy new sensations, test your physical ability and see beautiful panoramic views over the Loue Valley.

Unguided or in the company of an expert, you'll tackle some amazing exposed routes equipped with ladders, beams and rope bridges... Safely attached by a harness and cables of course.

The Loue Valley

Courbet painted the source of the Loue 14 times! That's how beautiful the site is! We must say, Mother Nature has been generous here, providing us with a picture-postcard landscape where water combines with the other elements.

Picturesque villages, dense flora, the Syratu waterfall, caves, canyons, lookout points and the Loue river that cascades down the rockface of an impressive cirque of 100 metres in height...

A whole succession of settings and no two are alike, but they are all spectacular and beautifully preserved.
